Chapter Thirteen

“Jerome kept in touch with me and my lil brothers after that. He would come by the house to see if our pops showed back up. He would bring us gifts for Christmas. He’d bring my mom food for the holidays just to make it easier for my mom. He would come and get us to go play basketball, baseball, softball, football, we even played golf a few times, not to mention we went to go play paintball. He used to take us to the movies, out to eat, skating, bowling, and we stayed riding new bikes every year. He played a damn good father role to us. It seems like after pops left, we start living the ‘good, rich life.”

“I always knew my mom was sweet, and everybody liked her around, so I felt that’s why Jerome took up so much time with us. I thought her personality was the reason. I never questioned Jerome plus I was taught as a kid growing up to never question an adult. I didn’t want to get popped in the mouth like my lil brother Jayvon. He questioned my dad one time and got popped dead on the kissers. I knew that stung so I never tried it.

Jerome waited until I turned fifteen to introduce me to a concealed weapon. Jerome felt that I was ready and responsible enough to carry one. He knew the streets was gone try me, so he wanted me to be ready. I was nervous as fuck, but I thought about it real hard. I told him to give me a few days to think about it. He said ok, but don’t take too long cause it’s real ugly in them streets and now that I’m older, a muthafucker gone try me soon!”

“I didn’t have to think too long cause Jerome was right. I was on my way home from school one day with my little brother JayQuan. Jayvon, Jaytwon, and Jayson was still in middle and grammar school. I peeped earlier a gang of teenagers between the ages of fifteen to nineteen, standing across the street from Kendle High School. That’s the school we went to. They had been out there since the fifth period. They were drinking, smoking, loud and cursing they ass off!”

“Principal Moore had to call the cops on them several times only to find himself being threatened by them if the cops came back again. So the principal let up! He didn’t want those problems, so he just let them be. We was told to be careful and try to walk in groups. Me and lil bro was tough, we said we ain’t scared of nothing. We good, we don’t need no crowd. How wrong we was!”
